Behind the Scenes of the Coaches DLC: An Interview with Producer Dominik

Ever wondered how a major expansion like the Coaches DLC for Euro Truck Simulator 2 is created? In this exclusive interview, we sit down with Dominik, the project’s producer, to discuss the development journey, core challenges, and the innovative passenger system that will redefine gameplay in the world of ETS2.

From Map Designer to Project Producer

Dominik’s path at SCS Software began on the map team for the Italia DLC, where he progressed to a lead role before transitioning into production. This extensive background in map development proved invaluable for the Coaches DLC, providing deep insights into the game’s world and the logistical challenges of integrating coach stations and routes across Europe.

The Role of a Producer: Coordination and Vision

“The main focus is coordination,” Dominik explains. His role is to ensure the entire team is aligned, has the necessary resources, and can efficiently overcome obstacles—from gameplay design puzzles to technical hurdles like rendering raindrops on large coach windows. “My job is to keep track of the development direction and respond quickly to changes,” he adds.

Defining the Coach Experience: The Passenger System

The central philosophy behind the DLC was to make coaches feel distinct from trucks. The answer: passengers. “Not only can they be seen inside the vehicle, but the player must also drive more carefully,” says Dominik. A new passenger satisfaction system will penalize harsh braking and sharp turns, while ambient sounds will remind drivers of their human cargo. This creates a unique balance between schedule adherence and smooth driving.

    Managing Scope and Future Vision

One of the biggest challenges is managing the project’s scope amidst high community expectations. “We need to carefully choose what we focus on now and what we will develop in future updates,” Dominik notes. The core team is small but agile, supported by around 20 people including consultants and specialists.

The vision extends beyond launch. The team is exploring partnerships with other coach manufacturers and aims to enhance the tourist aspect of the game, guiding players to scenic locations across Europe. “We want to continue working on the project, and we have further plans and updates for it,” Dominik hints.

Inspiration and a Message to the Community

The team drew inspiration from SCS’s own Bus Driver, community feedback, a real-life bus driver consultant, and other simulation games. Dominik’s personal passion for vehicles simulators fuels his commitment: “I am really looking forward to the release. I hope that the coaches will entertain the community.”
