Fort Pierre and Its Rich History
When arriving in Pierre from the south, you’ll first pass through Fort Pierre, the oldest settlement in the state. It has a history spanning over 200 years. A school building with a beautiful bison mural can be spotted here, along with Fort Volunteer, built to honor those who helped during the 2011 flood.
Across from Fort Volunteer stands a courthouse with its stone monument, showcasing another bison. Continuing down the road, you’ll see the Casey Tibbs Rodeo Center Museum, an important historical venue dedicated to South Dakota’s rodeo heritage.
Upon crossing over the Missouri River on the new bridge, you’ll be welcomed by a sign that reads “Welcome to Pierre”. This is followed by the Discovery Center, an interactive science museum perfect for families and children.
