Expanded Rest Mechanic: More Control Over Rest Periods
Today, the team at SCS Software happily gives players a glimpse at the upcoming 1.60 update for both Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator. The update introduces the Expanded Rest Mechanic, which changes how the fatigue system works in both games. Let us take a closer look.
The development team is implementing the Expanded Rest Mechanic after many requests from the #BestCommunityEver for this feature. This new feature gives players greater control over their rest periods. Drivers can now choose how long they want to sleep and exactly when they want to wake up. The system no longer limits players to a predefined rest duration.

Rest State vs Mandatory Break – Two New Fatigue Values
Alongside this change, the fatigue system is now split into two separate values: Rest State and Mandatory Break. Each value has its own icon in the user interface.
The Rest State, symbolized by a bed icon, gradually depletes rather than recovering over time. Extended periods of driving steadily reduce the Rest State. Resting restores it at a faster rate. Players receive a warning notification when their Rest State becomes critically low. Microsleep events begin occurring once the Rest State reaches exhaustion.

The Mandatory Break system operates more strictly. It is indicated by a “P” icon along with the remaining hours before a required stop. Players receive a notification two hours before a mandatory break is required. An additional warning appears if drivers exceed the allowed driving time. Exceeding the limit also results in a traffic violation penalty.
Driving Hours and Break Rules for ETS2 and ATS
In American Truck Simulator, drivers can stay on the road for up to 14 hours before taking a mandatory break. After that break, drivers need 10 consecutive hours of rest.
In Euro Truck Simulator 2, drivers may drive for up to 10 hours before taking a mandatory break. This break requires 9 consecutive hours of rest.

The development team believes these additions will provide players with greater flexibility and customization. The update also enhances realism. Both systems can be enabled or disabled independently in the settings. This allows drivers to tailor the experience to their own preferences.
